Working as a Champion of Reading at St. Joseph's NS Dundalk

As the Champion of Reading at St. Joseph's NS in Dundalk, my role is to promote a love for reading and make it a fun activity for everyone. Whenever I visit St. Joseph's, it's a fulfilling experience. Check out the video below to see the progress we've made over the past few years.

During this session, I visited four different classes and provided them with three samples of books from the school library. These books were donated to the school through the Reading Communities program and have the potential to be engaging reads for the students. I read aloud the blurbs from the books and shared my knowledge about them, which typically sparks the students' interest in their next reading selection.

Ms. O'Reilly, a teacher at our school, proposed The Class Books project and we worked together on it. The Class Books are a collection of short stories created by the children, for the children.

Over the past couple of years, we have collaborated to create characters, zines, poems, short stories, and more; providing ample support to allow them to make their own decisions on how to contribute to their Class Book.

We collaborated and generated a variety of ideas encompassing different genres, themes, characters, settings, and plots. This process inspired the children's creativity and imagination, enabling each child to write and illustrate their own short stories in a way that best represents their unique expression. The Class Book will be housed in the school's library and will be accessible for reading and borrowing, just like any other book.

This project aims to empower the children to express themselves in ways they may not have considered possible and make books and stories even more present in their lives.
